Revival is about how the last few years have been tough in more ways than one, and we’re all continuously navigating new ways of living, working, and being. This season not only marks a return to something resembling “normalcy,” but it represents more than that. We’re returning as more resilient and more reinvigorated. This series explores what we’ve been through, how we’ve grown, and what’s to come.
Reflections takes time to contemplate what we as a society have collectively experienced in recent years. It includes the piece, “Dusk” by world-renowned composer, Steven Byant, who arranged the work for Pure Winds in 2021. Other works on the program are contemplative in nature and ask the audience to consider their own personal experiences of the last few years.
Sounds of the Season celebrates the live music of the holidays that many of us have missed in the last few years. The festive sounds of Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Christmas and more will be shared and all will be encouraged to sing along!
Remixed draws on music from multiple genres and explores what it sounds like when you mash them together. Ever heard Bach and Kygo together? What about Charlie Parker and Mozart? All of the music in this concert will surely be something you’ve never heard before.
In Regeneration, Pure Winds will perform works that have been composed throughout the pandemic but haven't yet had a live performance of the work. Many new works written in the last few years were premiered virtually, but because of Covid-19 restrictions, have not reached listeners in a live performance space. This concert will also include the premiere of Pure Winds' annual Call for Scores winner.
Pure Winds is an award-winning woodwind quintet based in Lansing, Michigan that promotes outside-of-the-concert-hall musical experiences. The group engages audiences of all ages through educational residencies, masterclasses, and performances. Pure Winds consistently brings music to non-traditional venues and strives to create conversations between performers and audiences by making “classical” music exciting, relevant, and accessible. Praised for performing “...with terrific skill and panache” (David Volosin Katz - The American Prize), Pure Winds recently released their debut album under the Orpheus Classical label.
