Jon Gewirtz has been a music educator around the Lansing area for over 20 years. He currently serves on the music faculties of Lansing Community College, Olivet College, and Hillsdale College where he teaches a variety of classes including private saxophone lessons, jazz band, music appreciation, music theory, ear training, and blues, jazz, and rock history. An active performer, he has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and Brazil in various styles including classical, jazz, funk, salsa, R&B, blues, and pop. He is a member of faculty jazz ensembles from LCC and Hillsdale College and has performed with the Michael Dease Big Band, Jimmy Dorsey Big Band, the Midland Symphony Orchestra, Echoes of Pink Floyd and the Lansing Symphony Big Band. He performs throughout the state with the dance band, Soulstice, and has been a member of Lansing’s salsa band, Orquesta Ritmo, for over 10 years. He has performed at a variety of venues and music festivals throughout the state of Michigan.
Jon’s first solo album, 2020 Hindsight, was just released in March, 2022, and includes all original music. 2020 Hindsight is a collection of pieces that reflect how life changed for Jon when COVID shut the world down in March of 2020. Every track is a snapshot of an emotion, mood, or event that made an impact on Jon and is as diverse musically as he is. Styles from each track range from straight ahead jazz to funk to latin to the avant garde. The Jon Gewirtz Quartet consists of Jon Gewirtz (saxophone), Neil Gordon (guitar), Ed Fedewa (bass) and Larry Ochiltree (drums).
