Odyssey with Pure Winds

  • UrbanBeat 1213 Turner St Lansing United States (map)

Pure Winds is an award-winning woodwind quintet based in Lansing, Michigan that promotes outside-of-the-concert-hall musical experiences. The group engages audiences of all ages through residencies, masterclasses, and performances. Pure Winds consistently brings music to non-traditional venues and strives to create conversations between performers and audiences. Recent engagements have included concerts and clinics at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg KY, University of Michigan - Flint, a week-long tour throughout western Montana, as well as being the featured guest artist for the Chamber Music Montana series at the University of Montana. The group creates balanced concerts for audiences by bringing a fresh perspective to standard quintet repertoire while performing new music. Members of the ensemble have performed, taught, and placed in competitions across the U.S. and internationally.

The word “odyssey” typically describes a long, often difficult journey full of adventure. Pure Winds’s “Odyssey” program takes the audience on just such a journey, first by way of the ocean with English composer Malcolm Arnold’s Three Shanties. A stop in France is accompanied by Darius Milhaud’s La Cheminée du roi René, which depicts King René of Anjou’s daily stroll and the scenes he encounters along the way. Pure Winds then turns to the United States with Eric Ewazen’s Roaring Fork. This piece provides musical representations of Maroon Creek, Snowmass Lake, and Buckskin Pass, all located within the valley of the Roaring Fork River in Colorado. After a brief intermission, the audience embarks on a different type of odyssey, one that is much more personal and introspective. This journey is accompanied by David Maslanka’s Quintet for Winds No. 3, an emotional powerhouse sure to remind listeners of the excitement of future adventures and the warmth of returning home.
