“This is Our Environment” brings together original music, spoken word, and environmental justice in order to challenge our understanding of the environment to push us towards a more just and equitable society founded on a sense of community.
This performance at UrbanBeat Event Center is part of the debut tour of “This is Our Environment,” featuring myself and five of my great friends and musicians in the Joseph Herbst Sextet. Following the tour, we will record these pieces for our first album. This night, we will be performing all of the selections from the album, as well as jazz standards by fellow NC artists such as Thelonious Monk & John Coltrane and originals by members of the band.
My compositions draw influence from musicians such as Brian Blade, Ambrose Akinmusire, Alan Ferber, and Maria Schneider, while pulling on my classical background. Altogether, the music is highlighted by lyrical melodies interjected with bursts of energy and chaos to create stories that I hope will bring you, the listener, along for the journey.
I hope will join us in this event and conversation as we make our way across Michigan!
We will be joined by local spoken word artists, who will be announced in the near future.
